ASAN's HistoryFarmers and others in Alabama interested in sustainable agriculture have historically been isolated and frustrated with their inability to effect change as individuals, to learn about sustainable practices, and to learn from the experiences of others. In addition, those attempting to practice sustainable agriculture or effect change need the motivation and success that a group can provide. At the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (SSAWG) 2001 Conference in Chattanooga, the Alabama attendees recognized these needs and expressed a desire to develop and grow a sustainable agriculture network in Alabama. A Steering Committee consisting of individuals from different backgrounds and organizations was formed. The committee includes full-time small farmers using sustainable practices, as well as professionals who have worked, taught and marketed in the sustainable agriculture arena for years. The committee has close contact with the NRCS, RC&D Councils, Alabama Cooperative Extension System, SSAWG, Heifer International, and Sierra Club. Each of these organizations has access to research and resources as well as outreach capabilities. SSAWG in particular has ties to groups similar to ASAN all over the South with potential for sharing information, techniques and strategies. ASAN adopted the following organizational goals:
ASAN is currently sponsoring workshops and sustainable agriculture field days around the state (and promoting other events as well). We are also have a mentoring program for beginning and expanding farmers and ranchers, developing cooperative markets and encouraging farmers markets, and introducing consumers to alternative sources for healthy food. Have any ideas for ASAN? Call or write us with your thoughts and interests. ASAN also puts out a semi-annual newsletter. Let us know if you'd like to be on our mailing list!
